The twist lies in the fact that Shoyo is comparatively short-heightened which is considered to be a disadvantage in volleyball. His journey starts when he joins Karasuno High School.

One of the best things about this anime is how hard work beats all the odds. Most of the characters aren’t specifically gifted or stand out due to their ability. But still, they thrive forward sharpening their skills. You won’t be able to help but root out for them.
